5 goals alone with a hat trick, that too in the Champions League! 22-year-old Erling Haaland once again showed why he is considered a big star of the future.
Manchester United booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a 7-0 win over Leipzig on Tuesday night on Haaland’s rampage. Haaland’s performance in the record book has been disturbed.
This was Holland’s 25th match in the Champions League. He has reached the milestone of 30 goals in the tournament. No one else has achieved this milestone in fewer matches in the competition. Haaland broke the record of former Dutch forward Ruud van Nistelrooy (34 matches).
Haaland completed the hat-trick in the first half of the match against Leipzig. Haaland’s first Champions League hat trick was on his debut in the competition, for Salzburg in 2019.
Haaland is now only the second player in Champions League history to score multiple hat-tricks in the first half. The first was Marco Simone of Italy. He scored a hat-trick for AC Milan in 1996 and Monaco in 2000.
Haaland is also on the short list of players who have scored 5 goals in one Champions League match. Before him, only two footballers managed to make this record.
This precedent was set by Lionel Messi against Bayer Leverkusen for Barcelona in 2012 and Luis Adriano against Bate Borisov for Shakhtar Donetsk in 2014.
Meanwhile, Haaland has also made the record for the most goals in a season for the club Manchester City. He scored 39 goals this season. It broke Tommy Johnson’s nearly century-old record. This former English striker set the record by scoring 38 goals in the 1928-29 season.
